Server is the equipment and with any equipment problems and issues may appear in any moment.. Therefore, we consider it our duty to observe the status of client servers around the clock, without holidays and weekends.
From the very beginning of our work, we realized the need to implement a distributed monitoring system, which allow you to track real-time status of servers and applications served by the set of parameters. For example – to monitor the status of channels to serviceable servers from different datacenters, state services and services, system load, the number of free resources, dramatic changes in traffic or the number of connections.
Likewise, the system had time to make all the necessary checks and to notify administrators of problems detected in real time.
For us to monitor the state of the server – not just check the availability of resources, and diagnostics of the server and all services to be absolutely sure of the maximum server performance.
At the moment we shall check the server / service on the following parameters:
1. Availability of server’s IP-addresses (all) from 4 data centers (2 in Europe, 2 in North America)
2. Availability of domains served by server (by downloading of test image, and quering of test script with pre-defined status string).
Such kind of verification is necessary in order to eliminate the possibility of the situation, when port 80 is open and a Web server listens and accepts connections, but not able to handle and process request due to high load (as does most of the monitoring systems).
3. Availability of important services (SSH, WWW, FTP, SMTP, POP3, etc.)
4. Sharp change in the traffic behavior (number of connections and bandwifth on the server).
Need to identify traffic leaching (hot-linking), (D) DOS-attacks, and other potential problems (often mistaken .htaccess files customers without checking the changes and go to domains).
5. Monitoring DNS records for domain.
Assists in a timely manner to restore the dns record with all sorts of problems (very often webmasters forget to renew domains)
6. Google blocked list (Google SafeBrowsing)
We check to see if Google added a domain listed as suspicious, in order to proceed immediately to identify the causes (There is some time between how Google finds suspicious content on the site and add momentum to the ban, this time should be used to correct the problem).
